Artist's Comments

I'll probably be posting more, as I do them, in my live journal [link] because I have 30 bird sketches that I'm going to color (this is #1) but I don't want to junk up my gallery here with all of them.

(EDIT: I lied, looks like I am junking up this place with some more of them ;p)

The original is roughly 3 x 6.5 inches. I used a mechanical pencil, a prismacolor blue pencil, mostly done with acrylic paint, and I used a little gouache in this- for the blue in the corner. It was done in one of the cheap, thin paper, moleskine sketchbooks. The image was referenced from the Birds of Oregon Field Guide by Stan Tekiela [link]

Oh wow, this is beautiful! I love the loose and kinda impressionistic paint splatters. It looks very free and organic. The bird looks great!

(By the way, this would actually be a tricolored blackbird. Red-winged blackbirds have red and yellow wing patches, rather than red and white. /bird-nerd)

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it.
And yeah, it's really funny you should bring that up: I was actually wondering about that. The picture I looked at was in this native bird book I have but, near where I grew up, which is on the other side of the country, there were a lot of red-winged blackbirds and you could really see the yellow. I thought "this can't be righ.t" So it honestly makes me think that the photo was bleached out (or they got the wrong bird X)

*sings* Blaack bird fly... :3 I love this a lot. In St. Louis, I remember seeing a lot of these by the arch. They have a lovely cry.
